The Cathedral of St. Peter of Alcantara, dedicated to this Catholic saint, is the main church of Petrópolis. The city was founded by order of the emperor of Brazil, Dom Pedro II, including to install its palace of summer (although near Rio de Janeiro, the place is 840 meters of altitude, with mild climate). This scene was captured at the end of Sunday Mass. São Pedro de Alcântara is the patron saint of Petrópolis and the Brazilian Monarchy. Dom Pedro II never got to see the church completed, since he was banished from the country with his family in the year 1889.
